The December 2002 symposium, held in Boston, focused on the irregular surfaces and interfaces of oxide systems, rather than on the more ordered systems that previous meetings have examined. It also departed from tradition by combining papers on modeling, characterization, and properties in all sessions. Several of the 34 papers explore the dynamical evolution of surface structure and the relationship between the structure of surfaces, their stoichiometry, and the distribution of bulk dislocations. Other topics include simulating oxide interfaces and hetero-interfaces, and the low-temperature growth of silicon dioxide thin films by ultraviolet photo- oxidation.
