商品簡介
Walter, formerly of the French Institute for Byzantine Study and an author of several major studies, has compiled a substantial reference on the many Byzantine warrior saints. Following a 40-page introduction to the warrior saints and their cult, Walter presents 53 chapters, one for each saint, grouped according to their place in the hierarchy of warrior saints in Byzantine practice. Each entry gives an account of the saint's life, with particular attention to his military career, and the texts, images, and traditions associated with him. A concluding chapter presents an overview of the warrior saints, their careers, iconography, the development of their hierarchy, and the aesthetics of their representation. A series of b&w plates are included. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
