Composite Materials Handbook

Presented by the Department of Defense and the Federal Aviation Administration, this first volume in a six-volume set contains guidelines for determining the properties of polymer matrix composite material systems and their constituents, as well as the properties of generic structural elements, including test planning, test matrices, sampling, conditioning, test procedure selection, data reporting, data reduction, statistical analysis, and other topics, with a special focus on the statistical treatment and analysis of data. It contains guidelines for general development of material characterization data and specific requirements for publication of material data in the set. It provides material characterization, test methodology, and data development guidelines adaptable to various needs for polymeric matrix composite materials, including methods for obtaining data for constituent materials (fibers and matrices), combined material forms (prepreg), and cured lamina and laminates, with information on a range of test types, environmental conditioning methods, and data handling techniques commonly used during composite structure development programs. It includes guidelines for testing at some higher structural complexity levels, but focuses on material-level property characterization, and emphasizes statistical methods typically used for the determination of property values and the specific requirements for data published in the second volume of the handbook. This version includes revisions and new information on lamina, laminate, and special form characterization; structural element characterization; and statistical methods. It adds information related to broader applications from non-aerospace industries. The volumes are intended to standardize methodologies related to testing, data reduction, and reporting of property data for current and emerging composite materials for engineers around the world designing and fabricating products from composite materials.
