The medieval church taught that marriage could not be dissolved and that consent was primary. However, marriage could be dissolved when one spouse joined a religious order after consenting, but before consummation. The issue troubled 13th century academics and during the 14th century, Pope John XXII Nold (history, State U. of New York at Albany) asked leading theologians and lawyers to study the issue and make recommendations regarding the exception. The author's study reconstructs the story of the development of John's resulting bull, Antique Concertationi, and offers numerous and scholarly insights into how decisions were made at the Roman curia in Avignon under John.
