Tertullian, On Idolatry and Mishnah Avodah Zarah ─ Questioning the Parting of the Ways Between Christians and Jews

Binder presents a slightly revised version of her PhD dissertation (2009: Bar-Ilan U., Israel). The study is a systematic comparison of similarities and differences between the mishnaic treatise, Avodah Zarah and Tertullian's text, De Idolatria--two texts that date from roughly the same time and have a common theme but have previously been compared only sporadically. General background includes coverage of Christians and Jews in Carthage and the "parting of the ways." The study addresses Tertullian's heresies, his place among other Christian authors, and Tertullian and the Jews in the wider Graeco-Roman world--before proceeding to detailed comparisons pertaining to social and commercial relationships and contacts between Jews and Christians.
