The Nonprofit Almanac

The Nonprofit Almanac 2012 features the most recent data on the philanthropic sector, presented in more than 50 charts and 100 tables. Topics include the nonprofit sector and its place in the national economy, wage and employment trends, trends in private giving and volunteering, financial trends in revenue and outlays, and the size, scope, and finances of public charities. The Almanac includes a classification scheme for charitable organizations based on the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities and a glossary of nonprofit scholarship terms.

Katie L. Roeger is assistant program director of the National Center for Charitable Statistics, a program of the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy at the Urban Institute. She manages the NCCS database of nonprofit organizations and integrates business, Census, and other survey data. Ms. Roeger transforms raw data into research reports that inform policymakers, the general public, and students about the tax-exempt sector. She also provides statistical support for surveys and other research studies. Recently completed research projects include the revocation of nonprofit organizations, nonprofit-government contracts, domestic and international charitable giving, education support organizations, and diversity in nonprofit leadership. Ms. Roeger's studies have been cited in the national media, and she has been quoted in the Chicago Tribune, the Star Tribune (MN), and the New York Times. Before joining the Urban Institute, Ms. Roeger worked as a mathematical statistician with the U.S. Census Bureau, where she evaluated the accuracy of economic indicators and conducted research to improve statistical methodologies.Amy S. Blackwood is a consultant with the Urban Institute's National Center for Charitable Statistics, working on various nonprofit research projects. Before her consultancy, she was a research associate at NCCS and worked as a policy analyst at the Corporation for National and Community Service. Ms. Blackwood's work with NCCS has focused on examining public charities in the health and education subsectors. She holds a master's degree in public service and administration from Texas A&M University.Sarah L. Pettijohn is a research associate in the Center on Nonprofits and Philanthropy, where she serves as a project team member on various studies. In addition to her research work, Ms. Pettijohn is a Ph.D. candidate and adjunct faculty member at American University in the Department of Public Administration and Policy. She holds an M.P.A. and graduate certificate in nonprofit management from the University of Texas at Dallas. Ms. Pettijohn was named an emerging scholar by the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organization and Voluntary Action in 2011 and a Founders Forum fellow in 2010 by the American Society for Public Administration.
