Anderson and Hall (mathematics, State U. of New York-Harper College) designed a course, and this accompanying text, for sophomore students to take after they had completed the calculus sequence but before they began the advanced calculus sequence. The goal was to bridge the gap they and others saw growing between the two levels. They systematically treat important properties of the real number system and such concepts as mapping, sequences, limits, and continuity. The introduction of sets allows the concepts to be treated from a topological perspective. The final chapter discusses metric spaces, and generalizes many of the earlier concepts and results to arbitrary metric spaces. The 1963 edition was published by John Wiley and Sons, New York.
