商品簡介
As an academic concept of social relations existing between the family and the state, "civil society" has had both a descriptive and a prescriptive purpose, promoting ways to counter repressive states, but also paradoxically encouraging forms of social exclusion. Trentmann (history, U. of London, UK) presents 15 papers that combine history and theory to explore the tension of this relationship in Britain and Germany through examinations of the intellectual origins of the concept, the activities of associational life in 18th and 19th centuries, religious and gender exclusions in associations, and the relationship of civil society to political culture.
