Garbage is nowhere the same level of environmental concern as habitat destruction and climate change, admits Thomson (environmental sciences, U. of Virginia), but studying it casts into vivid relief the interconnections between the environment politics, markets, race, and class, especially because, unlike some mushier problems, the generation and disposal of trash is entirely a product of human activity, and utterly under our control--as a society if not necessarily as individuals or even communities. She discusses trash management in the US; whether Americans are number one in trash (yes); landfill capacity, schools, and environmental justice; regulatory and legislative efforts to limit the movement of trash; and solving the genuine problems of long-distance trash transport. She does not even get into the puzzle it will cause future archaeologists if Virginia's garbage is buried in Alabama. Annotation c2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
