This introduction differs from other elementary works on partial differential equations, in that almost half of the book is devoted to numerical methods for solving such equations, and in its emphasis on simultaneous consideration of the physical system, the continuous model, and the discrete model. Coverage begins with mathematical modeling and partial differential equations, then continues with introduction to the Fourier series and eigenvalue expansions. The heart of the book presents solutions of problems of partial differential equations. Exercises are included. Previous courses in calculus and ordinary differential equations are required.
