Counter to typical tourism studies that focus on consumers in fixed vacation destinations and activities, Baerenholdt (geography, international development studies, Roskilde U., Denmark) and fellow Danish and UK researchers apply a new paradigm. In case studies in which tourist constructs are likened to tangible but shifting sandcastles, travelers are viewed as shaping their vacation spots via mobile, networked performances. B&w illustrations include maps and tourist "romantic gaze" and "family gaze" performance photos. This research was conducted at the Tourism Research Centre of Denmark, 1999-2003.
