The Ethics of Educational Leadership

This textbook is for courses in administrative ethics, for those in advanced educational leadership programs, and for practicing educational administrators. Rebore (Saint Louis University) summarizes the ethical ideas of 23 philosophers and psychologists from the ancient period, the modern period, and mainly from the contemporary historical period, and applies them to educational leadership in order to offer insight on issues such as gender, cultural communication, and the ethics of nonverbal and verbal expressions of human communication. The content of the book is rooted in Standard Five of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium Standards for School Leaders. Learning features include discussion questions, problems, and case studies. For this second edition, excerpts from the philosophers have been removed to focus more attention on the application of the ideas to the practice of educational leadership. This edition contains three new chapters on communication, plus new chapters on ethical-legal issues and human relations aspects of ethics. Also new are chapter-opening scenarios. Ronald W. Rebore, Ph.D. is a tenured professor in the Department of Education at Saint Louis University, where he researches and teaches in the graduate educational leadership program. Before going to the University, he was a high school English and Social Science Teacher and a high school Guidance Counselor. Further, for a total of twenty-two years, he served as an Assistant Superintendent for business and finance in the Lindbergh School District and Superintendent of Schools for the Valley Park and Special School Districts. Most recently, he served as the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Graduate School at Saint Louis University. Dr. Rebore’s research and publications focus on the human dimensions of educational leadership, which include ethics, human resources administration, and human relations. He has authored twelve books, and is currently working on the 10^th revision of his internationally acclaimed book: Human Resources Administration in Education, A Management Approach. The HR book and his book on human relations have been translated into Chinese and are used to teach future educational leaders in China. The First Edition of the ethics book has been translated into Korean.
