商品簡介
Fort Jackson was racially integrated by its commander in 1950 and became one of the first to implement President Truman's 1952 order to integrate the military in general, but Myers (American studies and history, U. of South Carolina-Upstate) finds the story as told during the middle 1950s to be incomplete. He explores why integration took place at a single post and the impact that had on the desegregation of nearby civilian buses, schools, houses, and public facilities. Throughout he examines how base commanders and staff navigated challenges while working with municipal authorities, state politicians, national legislators, and the upper echelons of the military and government.
