Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Sexual Dysfunction

This book provides clinicians and clinical graduate students with a comprehensive description of readily useful, practical, and empirically-based treatments for the specific sexual dysfunctions most commonly encountered in clinical practice with couples and individuals. In providing guidelines for best clinical practices, Metz and Epstein emphasize cognitive-behavioral treatments and incorporate scientific evidence about sexual dysfunctions and sex therapy interventions. Each chapter incorporates research and theoretical foundations and includes a discussion of the issues that commonly arise when working with clients with sexual problems. This book also provides explanations of the clinician 's role in dealing with clients with sexual dysfunction to enhance the clinician 's competence and comfort; strategies for conceptualizing sexual dysfunction and choosing the appropriate interventions; and specific treatment details for male and female sexual dysfunctions. Numerous case examples throughout the text illustrate the clinical sex therapy process, and clinical aides, handouts, educational materials, and resources are included in appendices.

Michael E. Metz, PhD, was a psychologist and marital and sex therapist in private practice in Minneapolis/St. His co-authored book, Enduring Desire received the AASECT 2011 Best Book Award. He passed away in 2012.

Norman B. Epstein, PhD, is Professor of Family Science at the University of Maryland, College Park and Director of the nationally accredited Couple and Family Therapy Program at the University. He is also licensed as both a psychologist and a marriage and family therapist in Maryland, and has been conducting a part-time private practice with individuals, couples, and families for 33 years.

Barry McCarthy, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, professor of psychology, and certified sex and marital therapist. He has published extensively on couples and sexuality and has done over 300 professional workshops nationally and internationally. He is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2009 Smart Marriages Impact Award.
