Munsee Indian Trade in Ulster County, New York, 1712-1732

This work is a complete and extensively annotated Dutch-to-English translation of an account book of the mid-18th century. The account book is notable for the details it gives on whites' trade with indigenous groups in Ulster County, New York, over a period of 20 years, offering a wealth of information on about 200 Native Americans (about 100 of them are actually named in the account book). The book begins with historical background and editor-created data tables on aspects such as trade with Native women and trade of various goods. An appendix offers biographical info on 40 Native Americans listed in the account book. The book includes b&w photos of the document, as well as photos of typical Native American trade goods of the region during the period. Editor/translator Waterman is affiliated with the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Editor Smith has written articles for historical and museum publications.
