Fox (emerita, social sciences and bioethics, U. of Pennsylvania) and Swazey, an independent social and behavioral scientist affiliated with Boston University, began researching organ replacement--organ transplantation, dialysis, and the implantation of artificial hearts--in 1968, pretty much when the practice began. In 1974 they published The Courage to Fail and in 1992 the sequel Spare Parts updating their account to that time. To this edition they add a new introduction outlining new ethical issues that have arisen as the technology has changed. As before, they emphasize the balance between beneficial and harmful effects.
