Colonial Collecting and Display ― Encounters With Material Culture from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Wintle (history of art and design, U. of Brighton, Britain) traces the history of a particular set of objects amassed by British travelers in islands of the Indian Ocean during the late 19th century, then accessioned into the collections of the museum service in Brighton & Hove. In describing the production, collection, and display of these objects, she reconceptualizes imperial relationships between Andamanese, Nicobarese, and British individuals and communities both in the Bay of Bengal and on British soil. She discusses spheres of influence on the islands, colonial perspectives on material culture, the larger context of Victorian and Edwardian Britain, public property at Brighton Museum 1900-45, and objects and encounters today. Claire Wintle is a Senior Lecturer in the History of Art and Design at the University of Brighton. She holds degrees from the Universities of Manchester and Sussex and has worked in collections and public programs at the Royal Pavilion and Museums, Brighton & Hove, and National Museums Liverpool.
