The Changing Dynamic of Cuban Civil Society

Gray (European Network of Excellence on International Migration, Integration, and Social Cohesion) and Kapcia (Latin American history, U. of Nottingham, UK) present seven "micro studies" united by their concern with the growth of civil society in Cuba and its relationship with the state within the context of the dramatic changes in Cuban politics and society since 1990. The papers discuss the political culture of Cuba, the debates over the nature of and role of civil society within Cuba, the socioeconomic and political significance of the emergence of a layer of petty entrepreneurs within Cuban society, the local "neighborhood movements" in Havana that aim to solve local problems with the direct participation of those affected, international solidarity organizations and friendship groups, religious associations and their new capacity for civic action, and non-governmental organization experience in Cuba.
