The inspiration for the story came from the illustrator, Jo Wicker's granddaughter. After reading a book about sea turtles, Danielle came home from school one afternoon and asked, “Wouldn't it be fun to swim with a sea turtle?” Denise wrote a short poem for her daughter and then expanded it.

Denise was born and raised in Sanford,NC, but spent all of her summers in Long Beach, NC (now known as Oak Island). There, she became a long-time fan of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. She gets her writing inspiration from real life events and, since age eleven, has written over 200 poems. Denise has a Masters Degree in Social Work, is married to an outdoor sportsman, John, and has two book-loving children, Derek and Danielle.
