Many intellectually disabled people are neglected, abused, or even killed by their families or caregivers. Robinson (research fellow, Centre for Children and Young People, Southern Cross U.) gets beneath the standard stories and delves into recognition of the abuse people with disabilities receive and the lack of moral authority given to them to report it. She uses nine case studies to explain the occurrence of abuses and reasons the perpetrators manufacture, the outcome of believing the abused and taking action, and the results of long-term abuse and neglect. Robinson includes systemic concerns, what the abuse means to others in the community, and new techniques and policies. Annotation c2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
