A central theme of this four-volume set is a considered policy of both prevention and promotion in programs and policies for children, adolescents, and families. Programs, policies, and current research are described in the 95 chapters of the set, divided into sections that include theory, history, family diversity, models for development, risks to children, current public systems, national and international perspectives, perspectives from the philanthropic and religious communities, engagement of universities and academics, and professional outreach. The majority of the non-theoretical chapters present case studies from the writer's research and practice. The contributors are academics, professionals, and some graduate students in clinical and developmental psychology, early childhood and family policy, social anthropology, and human ecology; most are in the US.
