商品簡介
The eighteen papers presented by Mahdi (Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, U. of Exeter, UK), Wurth (Free U. of Berlin, Germany), and Lackner (honorary research fellow, U. of Exeter) collectively provide an overview of cotemporary social, political, legal, economic, environmental, and development issues facing the southern Arabian country of Yemen since its 1990 unification and on into the near future. Opening chapters review issues of structural adjustment and the political economy of Yemen. The judiciary, commercial litigation and arbitration, and other legal issues are discussed. Water management, land tenure, agriculture, and natural resources management are then explored. Remaining chapters focus on social and regional issues, including poverty reduction; women's health; Islam, custom, and politics; housing and health care; land distribution and urban development; and education. Also included is a 1998 address by Abdul-Kareem Al-Iryani, the special advisor to the President of Yemen, on the role of the state in a traditional society. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
