Choral Music in Global Persepective ― Traditions and Repertoires

Focus: Choral Music in Global Perspective introduces the little-known traditions and repertoires of the world’s choral diversity, from the prison choirs of Thailand and the gay and lesbian choral organizations of the Western world, to the community choruses in the Middle East and the youth choruses of the United States. The book weaves together the stories of individuals, organizations, their music, and their pedagogies, while illustrating the author’s research about how choral culture is interacting with societies worldwide and transforming the lives of its members.

Through an engaging series of portraits beyond the scope of extant texts and studies, the author explores the dynamic, global realm of choral activity and repertoire. These personal portraits of musical communities are enriched by sample repertoire lists, performance details, and research that repositions a once Western phenomenon as a global concept. Andre de Quadros is Professor of Music and Director of the School of Music at Boston University and Chair of the Department of Music in the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He is the Artistic Director of the Tanglewood Institute and has additional faculty appointments at Boston University.
