Germany and the Black Diaspora ― Points of Contact, 1250-1914

They were a part of the mix from the thirteenth century, despite the fact that Germany was not unified and so did not enter into colonization until after other European countries. Africans appeared in German territories as free men and women as well as slaves; they influenced art and served at courts, they wrote, and they traveled.
