This study of women's labor history runs from the Civil War Era to the dawn of World War II and examines three different kinds of work communities. Hall introduces the volume with background on late nineteenth and early twentieth century labor history, portrayal of working class women in literature and art, and justification of the case studies selected. The first section looks at women in coal mining communities, contrasting the domestic pre-WW1 attitude with changing gender role possibilities in the interwar years. Part II addresses the household economy and insularity developed in inshore fishing communities. Part III discusses agricultural workers, including strength vs. cleverness as feminine qualities. Hall concludes by drawing together the similarities in the ways that labor environments and gender roles interacted to define the place of women in these work communities.
