Detroit ― Three Pathways to Revitalization

Solomon in this problem-solving volume addresses the ongoing economic and population slump of Detroit. He starts by reviewing the city's history and context leading up to current difficulties. Next comes a critique of current efforts to address the fiscal crisis from the public sector. Proposals for both public and private-sector solutions are presented, including repair efforts in the public school district and incentive structures for repopulation. The final part of the book suggests a new "alternative political economy" sector featuring community-based sustainable institutions such as community gardens and local currency, making use of two resources that are currently abundant: vacant land and unskilled labor.
