The 12 papers collected here, first published in journals or proceedings between 1987 and 2001, are devoted to both specific and broad topics of science and learning in the Ottoman Empire, and as such will be useful to both the specialist and student. Among the topics are the development of learned societies, a long article (44 pages) on the historiography in the 20th century (up to 1965) of the Ottoman medreses, the efforts to found the first Ottoman university, modern astronomy, the contribution of Bashoca Ishak Efendi to science, and the relation between science and religion.
