商品簡介
In this collection of nine interdisciplinary articles based on papers presented at a workshop held in April 2003 by the Cultural Change, Dynamics and Diagnosis research program of the University of Groningen, contributors examine the many, often irreconcilable aspects of the study of the theory of evolution and how this conflict affected Western life. Topics include a survey of notions about what exactly constitutes "evolution"; Haekel's evolutionary project in morphology; aesthetics and tragedy; the problems of Victorian social identity, especially when traditional thought about the mind and body were questioned by this new theory; the work of van Eeden the elder after Darwin; the perspective of Belgians about evolution up to 1940 and in The Netherlands up to 1900; the relation between alcoholism and the concept of degeneration in the Dutch medical community; Taine's perceptions of evolution and the history of Dutch art and the perception of utopianism in its literature; and the changes wrought by the artistic revolution from about 1890 to 1918.
