商品簡介
Written by a drama teacher and an educator in palliative medicine, this unusual book links the challenges of palliative care with the moral and social problems that playwrights have explored over the ages. Each chapter uses one ancient or contemporary play to illuminate themes and choices in end-of-life care. For example, Shakespeare's King Lear is used to highlight issues of communication, and Caryl Churchill's Cloud 9 (1979) is used to highlight the complexity of physical and spiritual issues encountered in end-of-life-care. Each chapter opens with an overview of the play's themes, a plot synopsis, and a discussion of modern interpretations and cultural contexts. Discussion then turns to clinical contexts related to themes of the play, with several case histories and commentary. Chapter summaries, activities, and b&w illustrations are included. The book's broad readership includes all those involved in palliative care: doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and spiritual advisors. Ewan Jeffrey is affiliated with Queen's University Belfast. David Jeffrey is affiliated with the University of Edinburgh. Distributed in the US by Martin P. Hill Consulting.
