商品簡介
The articles in this collection discuss aspects of the city of Alexandria from its foundation by Alexander the Great following the Greek conquest of Egypt to the early centuries of the Christian era. Hinge (classical philology, University of Aarhus, Denmark) and Krasilnikoff (history, University of Aarhus, Denmark) focus on the religious and social changes over the years as the city moved from Ptolemaic to pagan Roman and then Christian Roman rule. The first four essays look at Alexandria as a unique place drawing on Greek patterns but creating its own character from Egyptian tradition and the Ptolemaic concept of kingship. The second section enters the Roman period with two articles on the Jewish community of Alexandria. The advent of Christianity in Alexandria is the focus of the last two chapters. The legacy of scholarship in the work of the Christian philosophers Origen, Athanasius, Clement and Cyril among many is noted. The final essay treats the Christian response to pagan temples and worship.. Distributed in North America by the David Brown Book Co. Annotation c2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
