Considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the monument honoring Maussolos gave English the word "mausoleum." Although the site was first rediscovered and excavated in 1857, this text is based on analysis of Danish excavations carried out between 1966 and 1977. This volume attempts to analyze the evidence from both of these excavations (the first of which is criticized as haphazard and misleading), compare it with the descriptions of the structure found in Pliny's writings, and reconstruct what architectural superstructure must have looked like.
