Chemical Issues in Biomass Burning in Sub-saharan Africa

The extent of biomass burning in Sub-Saharan Africa presents an important problem deserving priority. This comprehensive book explores all the aspects relevant to biomass burning in Sub-SaharanAfrica, with special focus on chemistry aspects.

Liliana Mammino is Professor Emeritus at the University of Venda (South Africa), Department of Chemistry. She obtained a degree in chemistry at the University of Pisa (Italy) and A Ph.D. in Chemistry at Moscow State University (Russia), both with theses in theoretical chemistry. She has worked in different countries (National University of Somalia, 1974-75; University of Zambia, 1988-1992; National University of Lesotho, 1993-1996; and at the University of Venda since 1997). In all these cases, she has been teaching both the undergraduate and postgraduate physical chemistry courses and the first year general chemistry course.

Liliana’s research interests comprise theoretical/computational chemistry, with main focus on the study of biologically active molecules, and chemical education, with main focus on conceptual understanding, the role of language, and education for sustainable development (green chemistry education). A considerable portion of her educational research is closely related to the courses that she teaches and to the additional challenges inherent in disadvantaged contexts and in second language instruction. Pietro R. Tundo is Professor of organic chemistry at Ca' Foscari University of Venice (Italy).

He was guest researcher and teacher at College Station (Texas,1979-1981), Potsdam (New York, 1989-90) and Syracuse (New York, 1991-92), Chapel Hill, (North Carolina, 1995).

He is holder of the Unesco Chair on Green Chemistry (UNTWIN N.o 731) and author of about 260 scientific publications and 30 patents.

Scientific interests are in the field of organic synthesis in selective methylations with low environmental impact, continuous flow chemistry, chemical detoxification of contaminants, hydrodehalogenation under multiphase conditions, phase-transfer catalysis (gas-liquid phase-transfer catalysis, GL-PTC), synthesis of crown-ethers and functionalized cryptands, supramolecular chemistry and finally, heteropolyacids.

P. Tundo was President of Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry Division of IUPAC (biennium 2007-2009) and presently is Chairman of Working Party of "Green and Sustainable Chemistry" of Euchems (European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences).

Professor Teuns van Ree obtained his DSc degree in Organic Chemistry from the University of Pretoria in 1980 and has been involved in research programmes at home and abroad during extended overseas visits in 1978-1979, 1988, 1999, 2002, and 2005. He is a member of the SA Chemical Institute and the SA Academy for Science and Arts, and Fellow of the Plastics Institute of South Africa.
