Ten anthologies assembled roughly between 1100 and 1500 are the ore from which Appelbaum picks 108 nuggets of stories. Unlike many anthologies that do not distinguish between prose, verse, drama, and history, he focuses on short, prose narratives of fiction or legend that are intended to entertain or instruct. He bypasses works and writers that are easily available elsewhere, such as Boccaccio and Chaucer. Translating himself from the Latin, Italian, French, Spanish, and German, he includes few notes to avoid an academic look, and no index. Stanley Appelbaum served for decades as Dover's Editor in Chief until his retirement in 1996. He continues to work as a selector, compiler, editor, and translator of literature in a remarkable range of languages that includes Spanish, Italian, French, German, and Russian.
