Speaker： We all know that the philosophical ideas of a culture can influence its people tobehave morally， but sometimes philosophy can have negative effects as well. This isparticularly true when ancient values come head to head with modem civilization. This can beseen in Vietnam， where the Confucian ideal is to have a son， because it is the sonsresponsibility to take care of his parents. Because this is a widely held belief， many familiesare making use of technology called Ultrasound to ensure that the sex of their child is malebefore it is born. If the baby is a female， many families choose to have an abortion. In othercountries， this practice is illegal， but in Vietnam it is not. As a result， more and more males arebeing born which is severely throwing off the male to female to ratio in that country. So， whenold meets new， the result is not always positive.
Student： Can I ask you a personal question？
Teacher： I guess so. Whats the question？
Student： In the reading you assigned， Nietzsche said that "God is dead." Is that true？
Teacher： I dont know if its true or not. I can tell you that Nietzsche did not mean thatstatement literally， although he was an atheist. He meant that belief in God， for manypeople of his generation， was less widespread because of developments in scienceand technology. Sure， a large percentage of the world still believe in God， butsocietys morals are based less on this belief.
Student： Oh， good. I was worried that he had died.
Teacher： What would you have done if I told you that he had？
Student： I dont know. Panic， I guess. Then I guess I could do whatever I wanted！
Teacher： Well， thats exactly what Nietzsche predicted would happen. He thought there wouldbe a period of lawlessness and nihilism after the "death of God."
Student： Ooh， scary. Then what？
Teacher： Well， Nietzsche thought that this would give rise to the birth of the bermensch， orSuperman.
