This book looks at informal economies under post-socialism, using a wide range of case studies including Slovakia, Russia, Lithuania and Kyrgyzstan. Chapters have a strong empirical focus but also engage in dialogue with interdisciplinary debates on informality and explain the theoretical significance of the illustrated practices. The book is wide in its geographical, empirical and theoretical scope. It explores different categories of people, and touches upon a wide range of countries currently in transition from socialism. The book engages with a growing body of literature on informal economies relevant to development studies, sociology, anthropology and human geography. At the same time it offers a critique relevant to development economics and political science.
