Many of Butler’s books focus on the environment or animals in their natural habitats. He is both author and illustrator of WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING; HUSH, LITTLE ONES; PI-SHU, THE LITTLE PANDA; IF YOU SEE A KITTEN; and the original hardcover CAN YOU CUDDLE LIKE A KOALA? Butler has also illustrated several books written by author Sally Grindley—LITTLE SIBU, LITTLE ELEPHANT THUNDERFOOT, and POLAR STAR—which have environmentally friendly themes. All of the above are Peachtree Publishers titles.Butler has received acclaim for these and many other works, including CIMRU THE SEAL, THE SNOW LEOPARD, and SHADOW THE DEER. An illustrator since 1976, Butler has traveled to West Africa and the Caribbean to study his subjects. He has worked in Amsterdam and in Oman, as well as in the United States. Butler lives in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England with his wife and two daughters.
