商品簡介
Interweaving entries from the diary of Lady Sarah Cowper (1644-1720) with an account of her life, Kugler (history, John Carroll U.) investigates how Cowper, stuck in an unhappy marriage since she was 20 years old, engaged and subverted the prescriptive literature for women prevalent at the time. Kugler hopes the material will shed light on how women understood and responded to prevailing ideologies of gender, but warns that the writings of an upper class Englishwoman should not be taken to be representative of women as a whole.
