Climate change is affecting Africa more drastically than any other region on the planet with the exception of the Arctic, and its effects and the ways its people cope with them are largely undocumented. This book fills in a gap in our knowledge and provides necessary tools for future discussion and mitigation. It examines the twin strategies of mitigation and adaptation that the people of Sub-Saharan Africa are putting in place to deal with the effects of the changing climate: more extreme weather events, changes in precipitation, changes in bio-diversity driven by shifting growing seasons and temperature patterns, et al. The tension between traditional cultural norms--especially that between gender roles and stereotypes--is the primary focus of this collection of papers written by several leading international scholars. Lingering effects of colonialism and their exacerbating legacy on the coping mechanisms are described. The volume concentrates primarily on five countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Uganda--but it is relevant to the wider context of Africa, and even more so, the rest of the world as well.
