商品簡介
Sincerity, the belief that the narrator of a poem is the author, is a constantly debated element of theory and practice. Being sincere is being pure, free from commercial culture and indicative of a proper distance of the soul. However, as Rosenbaum (English, U. of Georgia) points out, sincerity is not the actual opposite of theatricality, but produces in itself a parallel marketability as readers consume authors, pay in fame and manufacture paradox as they gobble up writings and their supposedly sincere writers simultaneously. She pursues the "walking poets" such as Wordsworth and O'Hara as they take us through the landscape of their pure minds but sell us the walks themselves, the "mourning poets" such as Charlotte Smith and Sylvia as they market their agony, and the miniaturists such as Barbauld and Elizabeth Bishop as they push the ethics of sincerity to the small end of the sincerity telescope.
