Tilli's 2012 dissertation was named the best at Jyvaskyla University, Finland for 2013, and has been revised for publication here. In it he tackles the rhetorical problem of how Lutheran priests applied religious and biblical typologies in order to support the war effort of the Finnish state during what most people call World War II. He uses the theological concept of metanoia to frame an explanation of how clergy purported to change minds in order to prepare the audience for action. Then he applies American philosopher Kenneth Burke's (1897-1993) theory of symbolic action in a rhetorical analysis of clerical texts. There is no index. Jouni Tilli received his PhD in 2012 from the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of Jyvaskyla (Finland). His dissertation The Continuation War as a Metanoic Moment. A Burkean Reading of Lutheran Hierocratic Rhetoric won the Best Dissertation Award 2013 from Jyvaskyla University. Tilli’s work includes publications on Politics of History and Finnish History.
