The understanding of the right to life as both a human right of the child and as a general principle of the Convention, argues Nowak, requires an interpretation of Article 6 that takes into account all other rights enshrined in the Convention. His views are based on the general rules of interpretation laid down in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, and emphasizes the travaux preparatoires, the practice of the CRC Committee in the state reporting procedure, respective jurisprudence of other human rights monitoring bodies, and relevant academic literature.
