In September 2001, the Freed Slaves: Exclusion or Integration conference in Nottingham, England drew historians from North America, the Caribbean, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and even London. From that gathering, 10 papers are published here on the cross-cultural history of freed people, freed people in a slave society, and freed people after emancipation. Among the times and places discussed are the Roman world, ancient Sri Lanka, 18th-century Brazil, the Cape Colony 1652-1856, and Jamaica 1790-1890. Marc Kleijwegt is Assistant Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is the author of Ancient Youth: The Ambiguity of Youth and the Absence of Adolescence in Graeco-Roman Society (Gieben, 1991) and co-editor, with Wim Jongman, of After the Past: Essays in Honour of H.W. Pleket (Brill, 2002).
