System Modeling and Control With Resource-Oriented Petri Nets ― Automation and Control Engineering

For engineers and researchers, Wu (industrial and systems engineering, Guangdong U. of Technology, China) and Zhou (electrical and computer engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology and XiDian U., China) introduce a new resource-oriented Petri net (ROPN) model that they developed that reduces model size and offers improvements to facilitate effective modeling, analysis, and control of automated manufacturing systems. They discuss theories and methodologies for implementing cost and time-saving improvements to manufacturing systems; provide definitions of Petri net theory and classical colored Petri nets; compare resource and process-oriented Petri net modeling methodologies; and provide tools for deadlock avoidance such as deadlock-free routing and scheduling. They outline examples to illustrate concepts, theories, and approaches for solving actual application problems and cover applications to automated and reconfigurable manufacturing systems, and automated guided vehicle, semiconductor manufacturing, and flexible assembly systems.
