Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) is mostly known for his contribution to early British Romantic poetry, but later in life he also wrote extensively on philosophical matters. It is this philosophical work that Vigus (philosophy, Friedrich-Scholler-U., Germany) examines in relationship to Plato. On one hand, he documents to the extent possible when and by which texts and commentaries he read Plato, and provides a critical account of his explicit comments on his Greek predecessor. On the other hand, he argues that the form and content of his writings--mainly but not exclusively his later prose--can be usefully interpreted with references to Plato's thoughts. In this manner, he says, his view of the literature can be correlated with the historical facts of Coleridge's learning.
