The Nation in the Global Era

Harris (history, DeVry U.) presents 22 papers from the 2008 conference of the multidisciplinary Global Studies Association of North America, which brought together scholars and activists from the United States, Canada, and Mexico in order to focus on the theme "The Nation in the Global Era: Conflict and Transition." The papers are presented in thematic sections on the transnational class structure and the state, the political economy of globalization, national identity and developments, and environmental impacts. Examples of specific topics include the transnational capitalist class and El Salvador's involvement in the Central American Free Trade Agreement; the political economy of US wars of choice; the neoliberal agenda in Bolivia and its aftermath; European markets as challenges or opportunities for Mexican small and medium enterprises' internationalizations; the Turkish relationship with Northern Iraq and Kurdish cross-border politics; the legacy of the Ottoman past in contemporary Turkey; and China's role in the challenge for global sustainable development.
