Scholars of 18th- and 19th-century English will welcome this new critical edition of the works of Robert Southey published from 1793-1810. The volumes include Joan of Arc, The Curse of Kehama, Thalaba the Destroyer, and Madoc. Volume 5 contains 197 selected shorter poems, including Poems on the Slave Trade, To Mary Wollstonecraft, Botany-Bay Eclogues, English Eclogues, and a selection of unpublished poems and collaborations. Noting Southey's lifelong habit of revision, Pratt (English, Queen's U., Belfast, UK) selected the first printed version of each work and provides annotation to revisions appearing in subsequent printings as well as changes Southey made in manuscripts (surviving manuscript transcripts of each work are included). For Joan of Arc, the revisions were so great that two separate versions, the 1796 and the 1798, are reproduced, allowing a side-by-side reading. In addition to textual annotation, Pratt provides an introduction to each of the five volumes, as well as a general introduction and chronology in v.1, and short introductions for each poem in v.5.
