Diabetes and the Brain

Though acute cerebral complications of diabetes such as hypoglycemia or stroke have been known for a long time, only recently have more chronic conditions such as cognitive and mood disorders been recognized. Overviews of both kinds of complications are provided for clinicians and researchers, mostly from the perspective of neurological sciences, but also other medical specialties. The first two sections update neurologists on Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and update diabetologists on stroke and dementia. Studies then focus on specific complications, such as ketoacidosis and the hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state, hyperglycemia in acute stroke, cognition in children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes, diabetes and depression, and central nervous system involvement with diabetic neuropathy.
