The authors report on their personal investigation of civic groups in Providence, Rhode Island, in which they attended meetings and watched other activist activities while interviewing participants on their views on civic engagement and political culture. Major themes that emerge from their findings include the prevalence of hope for change among activist citizens, even as they proclaimed themselves as not interested in politics, as well as widely differing attention to the issue of inequality.
