The Chateauroux manuscript contains one of only four complete textsof the Chanson de Roland in Old French still in existence, explains Moffat, but it has been overshadowed by the greater literary merit of the Oxford manuscript and has been neglected because it is in a small provincial archive. She points out that it is dated by its Gothic script, simple style of illumination, and linguistic feature to the late 13th century, and so reflects contemporary literary and popular tastes as well as historical events. For her edition, she worked first from the microfilm at the Archives Nationales in Paris, but then verified her version by close examination of the manuscript itself and comparing other editions.
