Hartman asks such questions as whether a work written in the colonial language French can express the everyday realities lived in Arabic in Lebanon, and whether it can be done without just spicing up the text to make it more exotic. She rejects the notion that using Arabic within a French-language text should be regarded as nothing but window dressing or a way to isolate a kind of irreducible Arabness within otherwise French texts. Lebanese women writers who use French offer a particularly apt corpus from which to address these questions and think about them in multiple contexts, she says, and so does.
